BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – FRIDAY MARKS EARTH DAY, AND KICKS OFF A WEEKEND OF ACTIVITIES AND CELEBRATIONS AROUND WESTERN NEW YORK AS GROUPS WORK TO HAVE MORE PEOPLE “GO GREEN” AND PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT WHILE RAISING AWARENESS OF POLLUTION.
Crews with the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy say the day is a good opportunity to highlight what they do, adding that every day is Earth Day for them.
The Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy maintains 850 acres of green space in our area.
The big project in the green house at Martin Luther King Jr. Park Friday morning was potting some of the thousands of geraniums that will be put out at the traffic circles in May.
All of the plants are grown from seedlings every year, and all of the debris and organic waste from the process is recycled as compost.
Conservancy crews will be teaching community members all about composting, and even sending people home with free compost, at an Earth Day celebration in Cazenovia Park on Saturday. The event runs from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and also features a document shredding service for confidential documents like bank statements, and a textile drive, where you can donate even torn clothing to be recycled.

Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy crews will also be taking part in a big Enviro-Fair at the Galleria Mall on Saturday. One big focus for the crews at that event will be educating the public about how they can help save the local ash trees from the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive insect that is killing ash trees across large parts of the country now.

The Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy is working to raise money to innoculate more than a hundred trees against the Emerald Ash Borer this year, but it relies largely on membership and private donations for many of its efforts.
