Position Title: Golf Course Greenskeeper

Reports To: Director of Golf

Salary Range: $42,000 – $55,000

Supervises: 2 – 15

Requirements: City of Buffalo residency, NYS Driver’s License

Position Summary:

The Greenskeeper is responsible for managing the maintenance of the three-(3) City of Buffalo municipal golf courses operated by the Conservancy as to their care, quality, and sustainability. These responsibilities include turf grass maintenance, equipment and personnel management, scheduling/maintenance systems, and pesticide applications. This position is in the golf department and reports directly to the Director of Golf.

This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week with non-exempt status according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Overtime hours may be required at certain times, with Director of Golf approval.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all phases of golf maintenance operations; oversee the care and maintenance of the golf turf (fairways and greens), bunkers, tee boxes; including, but not limited to mowing, watering, raking bunkers, fertilizing, aerating, trimming tee boxes and repairing divots;
  • Supervises and participates in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) on course grounds in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and Conservancy established guidelines;
  • Manage maintenance and repairs to irrigation systems, in consultation with the Director of Fleet, Buildings & Infrastructure and City of Buffalo;
  • Recruits, trains, supervises, and retains golf maintenance staff. Conducts employee evaluations and exercises disciplinary action as needed;
  • Provides technical, operational and safety training for employees to ensure safe working conditions;
  • Works with the Director of Golf in the development of golf course budgets (staff hours and payroll, chemical and supply orders and other course improvements that may be needed or forecasted), and responsibly adheres to budgets;
  • Coordinates and participates in snow removal and winter maintenance activities as needed throughout the Olmsted Parks system.
  • Supervises and participates in equipment maintenance on a daily, weekly, and annual basis;
  • Maintains maintenance records and completes required reports. Order parts and supplies as needed;
  • Schedules maintenance practices around member play and outings to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption to members;
  • As needed, assists in managing the maintenance and restoration of the athletic fields as needed in coordination and communication with district supervisors;
  • Works in cooperation with park operations maintenance staff;
  • Must coordinate with all clubs as needed for course preparation for certain events.
  • Participates in developing an annual schedule of events for the pleasure of golf members;
  • Attend regular Conservancy staff meetings as well as Olmsted Community Alliance (OCA) meetings for appropriate districts;

Qualifications and Requirements (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • City of Buffalo residency required;
  • NYS Driver’s license is required, CDL license is preferred;
  • Must have or work to obtain a NYS Pesticide Applicator License, with knowledge of pests, fertilizer and/or pesticide application, and knowledge of turf and pest management guidelines and standards, is a plus;
  • At least five years of experience in turf management;, golf course experience is a plus;
  • Knowledge of USGA regulations and standards regarding course settings. Plus, knowledge of golf course maintenance activities to include placement of tees and pins, irrigation techniques and turf care;
  • Experience in marking sports fields, golf equipment repairs, standards for athletic fields, and reel sharpening is a plus;
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments, with an ability to understand, follow and enforce safety procedures;
  • Resourcefulness in utilizing staff and/or equipment, and ability to follow an approved annual budget to the greatest benefit of the organization;
  • Possess a leader and collaborator mentality for fostering a cooperative work environment and a work ethic in leading by example, reliability and dedication;
  • Willingness to learn new skills;
  • Professionalism in communication, demeanor and respectful relationship building at the highest level in representing the Conservancy and fostering collaborative partnerships;

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • A combination of outdoor and office work;
  • Paperwork, meetings, and administrative functions – balancing between functions will be essential;
  • Outdoor work may be performed in extreme weather conditions;
  • Job duties may require an employee to bend, reach, stoop, sit, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time, as well as lift and/or move heavy objects which at times could be up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires employee to travel regularly between courses;
  • Requires employee to operate standard to heavy equipment;
  • Weekend and holiday work required during golf season;
  • Flexible hours depending on workload and ever-changing priorities;
  • Must be able to adapt to ever-changing resources and limited budgets;
  • May be required to respond to emergency, on-call situations at any time.
