Position Title: Horticultural Maintenance Worker – Seasonal

Reports To: Special Gardens Manager/Circles & Beds Supervisor

Salary Range: $15.00 – $17.00 per hour

Supervises: 0

Requirements: City of Buffalo residency, valid NYS Driver’s License

Position Summary:

The horticultural maintenance worker – seasonal is an entry level seasonal position. This position requires basic horticulture and plant knowledge; a love for the outdoors and making a difference in the community. This position is part of the operations department and reports directly to the special gardens manager or the circles & beds supervisor.

This is a full-time seasonal position; working 37.5 hours per week with non-exempt status according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Overtime hours may be required at certain times, with supervisor’s approval.

This position is a Class 3A according to the Conservancy’s employee handbook and as such benefits include the following:

Class 3A – The Conservancy offers medical plans with a $350 employer provided allocation toward monthly premiums, upon meeting certain criteria. A 403(b)-retirement plan and paid sick time.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Weeding, pruning, and watering;
  • Planting and mulching;
  • Raking, shoveling, and sweeping;
  • Performs daily maintenance of tools and equipment utilized;

  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications and Requirements (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • Basic knowledge of weeding, pruning, and planting;
  • Basic knowledge of plant, tree, and pest identification;
  • Ability to work independently as well as with other staff members and follow multi-step directions;
  • Ability to interact respectfully with the public;
  • Willingness to learn new skills;
  • Degree in horticulture or related field preferred, but not required;
  • Professionalism in communication, demeanor and respectful relationship building at the highest level in representing the Conservancy and fostering collaborative partnerships.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Primarily outdoor hands-on work, potentially in extreme weather conditions;
  • Job duties may require an employee to bend, reach, stoop, sit, stand and/or walk for extended periods of time, as well as lift and/or move heavy objects which at times could be up to 50 lbs.;
  • Job duties may require traveling distances between park features or system locations;
  • Use of hand tools; as well as standard to heavy park and gardening equipment;
  • Must continuously foster a team approach to while working in the park environment;
  • Evenings, weekend, and holiday work may be required, as needed;
  • Flexible hours depending on workload and ever-changing priorities;
  • Must be able to adapt to ever-changing resources and limited budgets.
