Neighbors want to #SaveDelawarePark

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) – IT’S A DEBATE THAT JUST WON’T GO AWAY.

What will happen to the 198 and Delaware Park?

People in the Parkside Community are calling on Gov. Cuomo to save Delaware Park, putting up lawn signs calling on the Governor.

“It’s just a dumb idea to build a highway through a park,” said Bill Henry.

“We just think the Governor laid out a transformational vision for this project and the DOT has fallen short of that promise,” said Brian Dold, the Director of Planning for Olmsted Parks.

Members of the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy and the Scajaquada Corridor Coalition have started a campaign to save Delaware Park. Over the last several years after 3-year-old Maksym Sugorovskiy was hit and killed after a car veered off the road and into Delaware Park, the State DOT has been working on a re-design, but many say it has fallen short.

“Results of their study are not good enough for Buffalo,” Dold said.

They fear if something doesn’t give, they won’t get the chance to change the park and bring it back to Olmsted’s vision for another few decades.

So far close to 5,000 people have signed the petition urging the DOT to reconsider the design.
